when things get boring in the bedroom

11 September 2014 by Andrea Leave a Comment

when things get boring in the bedroom

Sometimes things get boring in the bedroom. Stale. Just the same old thing, day after day, week after week, month after month. A sense of ennui sets in and all you can think about is how something has to change. You just can’t continue the way things are.

No, I don’t mean that has gotten boring! I mean your decor has. Geez, you people always have your minds in the gutter!

Well, when things have gotten dull, spice it up! Consider it a marriage encounter for your decor!

Recently I was feeling bored (with my decor) and so I decided to spruce things up a bit. As always, I’m on a tight budget, so it included a combination of rearranging some of what I already have, using some things that have been curing for years, and adding a little bit of new to the mix.

In general, I’m moving from a more traditional look to a more eclectic look – vintage and shabby chic marry mod. OK, so that’s more of a threesome than a traditional marriage, but when we’re decorating we don’t always need to follow societal norms!

Let’s start with the armoire. Here’s the before pic, with fake plants that look just fine, but no doubt more in the traditional vein…

Armoire beforeGoodbye fake plants, hello gold dress form trussed in faerie lights!

Armoire after with lightsThe faerie lights were $11.99 plus shipping. Well worth the expense. They’re battery operated, so there are no pesky wires running over the side of the armoire. Plus they run on a timer, so I can turn them on and six hours later they go off automatically. Perfect for when you need to spice things up with some ambiance!

Here’s how it looks during the day with the lights off…

Armoire after in daylightYou will notice that the dress form is off center, and there’s a lot of empty, open space on the top of the armoire. I’m really trying to get OK with imperfection. That includes getting comfortable with negative space and off-center presentation. I’ve actually grown to love the oddness of it all…it really highlights the dress form as the featured element.

Speaking of the dress form, this beauty has been curing for years! I purchased her for $1.25 at a local high school rummage sale. Been waiting to find the perfect place for her. Think I’ve found it!

Moving on…

Let’s take a look at one of my favorite possessions. A Picasso print of A Mother and Child and Four Studies of Her Right Hand. This was my grandmother’s print and I always loved it in her home from the time I was a kid. I’ve had it in my bedroom since I got it, but thought it needed to be featured a little more prominently, so I added some black and white polka dotted washi tape to frame it out…

Picasso print 1I just eyeballed the tape placement, because that’s what I do, but you could always be more precise and measure it out like a normal human.

(If you’re wondering why I have such weird angles with the wall hangings, it’s because I get a lot of light in this room so the angle is the only way to avoid glare in the pic. Carry on…)

Another angle…

Picasso printI love, love, love how this looks! It really brings out the tiny, black rim on the frame, as well as the black in the sketch. Plus the washi tape was a steal – I got 3 rolls for $2.99 at Michaels. More to come later with one of the other rolls of tape.

By the way, polka dots are my fave. Especially black and white polka dots. So this just makes me happy every single day when I see it! Here’s a close-up so you can better see the polka dots (as well as the aforementioned glare)…

Picasso print 2Enough about that. On to the one splurge.

Before the splurge, there was an angel print, accompanied by a broken vintage bracelet…

Angel print with braceletThe splurge was spending $40 on a custom-printed Lumineers poster on Etsy…

Lumineers 2I love the Lumineers and I superlove the poster art! The perfect mod piece to start the sexy love affair with vintage and shabby chic.

Sadly, I won’t be sharing the artist info here, because it took over a month and opening a case on Etsy to finally get the seller to ship, despite having paid. But at least I finally received it and I’m in love!

I tossed it into a basic poster frame and voila! Here it is from another wacky angle…

Lumineers 1And you can see the vintage bracelet remained.

To the left of my bed I tightened up the placement of the pieces that were already hanging on that wall, to give them more of a vignette feel…

frame artAnd on the right side of my bed I added a gorgeous mermaid print I bought a while back on Etsy from artist Amy Huddleston. (You know the drill…it was curing for a while.) I placed it in a mod white frame, which really brought an eclectic feel to the grouping. Talk about mod and vintage and shabby chic!

eclectic art grouping 3The blues and aquas and in mermaid print bring out the blue in the Girl with a Pearl Earring by Vermeer. Which, by the way, I found on the back of a Reader’s Digest magazine and decoupaged to a piece of painted wood.

But the white frame seemed too stark. Something was still missing…know what I mean?

eclectic art grouping 2Oh yeah. Washi tape, part deux.

eclectic art group with washi tapeI added some black and white chevron washi tape – part of my $2.99 three-pack – and it did the trick! Toned down the starkness of the white and tied it to the black in the other two pieces. Here’s a close-up…

eclectic art with washi tapeTaping perfection. Just eyeballed this as well. You could do the same, or maybe even be more precise and measure.

Although those are all awesome, we’re still not finished.

Previously, I had this angel art all lined up in a row…

Angel art beforeVery pristine and orderly, but where’s the flair?

I’ll tell you where the flair is…right here…

angel art groupingI mixed those bad boys up for a touch of the unexpected! We can’t be angelic and perfect all the time, especially when things have gotten boring in the bedroom!

Here’s where they are in the room…

angel artAnd finally, I dug deep into the world of curing and found these vintage mailbox doors that I purchased on eBay approximately 10 years ago.

mailboxes as artI figured that it was time to take the focus off the alarm system and the light switch – boring! – and add something interesting to this spot!

Now mind you, I did slice my finger open adding picture hanging wire to the back of these and heavily debated whether I needed a tetanus shot – I didn’t end up getting one and fortunately lockjaw has not set in – but they were certainly worth the effort!

mailboxes as art 2They just look so cool all lined up and are another metallic element, adding to the mixed metals in the room, accents of silver and gold and bronze.

A  whole new fun, updated bedroom for less than $100. Cheaper than sexy lingerie and a night out on the town! Who’s bored now?

Take my advice…don’t be afraid to mix it up in the bedroom!

little things – bracelet edition

This is a broken vintage bracelet…

This is a broken vintage bracelet used as art…

bracelet2

Pretty clever, huh?

As much as I would love to wear this bracelet, there was no fixing it, because the metal wasn’t strong enough to repair. But I still love the vibrant colors and beautiful design, so on the wall it went.

bracelet3

Works perfectly next to my print of First Kiss by Bouguereau, which I bought at Target a number of years back for $3.78. Can’t remember what I ate for breakfast today, but can remember how much I paid for something clearance 10 years ago! Go figure.

bracelet4

Yeah, it’s the little things, people…

holiday time

24 December 2012 by Andrea Leave a Comment

When I was out Christmas shopping. I spotted this awesome clock…

clock6

It appealed to all of those things that make me go weak in the knees – my love of letters and numbers, wood and metals, and vintage meets modern.

So, in the spirit of one for you, two for me, I bought it. Let’s say it’s a little Christmas present to myself.

I probably wouldn’t have splurged if I didn’t have an empty wall just begging to be filled…

clock5

See? Barren.

I used the toothpaste method to hang it that I learned on Pinterest. Add a dab of toothpaste to the hooks on the back of the piece you’re hanging…

clock4

…then place it exactly where you want it on the wall, and it leaves a glob of toothpaste on the wall exactly where your nail should go. Frankly, it worked better than I expected…

clock3Perfect placement and minty fresh!

Doesn’t it fill out the space perfectly?

clock 2

Love all of that vintage-y goodness! Plus it works perfectly with the two sepia tone pics to the right. And with the cat hiding on the stairs above!

clock 1

Merry Christmas to me. And to you too!

vintage cowboy room

24 August 2012 by Andrea 2 Comments

Yeehaw! Don’t you love some vintage cowboy? I sure do!

Sadly, my boy is almost a teen and doesn’t want a little boy room anymore. So we’re saying goodbye to the vintage cowboy room. But not before we pay tribute to it here on the ole blog.

Welcome…

But we’ll need to hurry before the boy finds out we’re in his room!

The dresser…

Antler lamp and little cowboy boots…

Snake hook and star…

And an awesome spaghetti western print…

A snake I painted, along with a collection of letter As…

The duvet cover I sewed…

Awesome cowboy fabric! I sewed the curtains too…

I was thrilled to find the arrowhead finials, but they were bronze, so I spray painted them black. Super cool fabric with a western matchbook print. Love it!

The nightstand, with horses and a hammered metal lamp…

I made a French memo board with rodeo fabric…

And one of the focal points of the room is the star hanging on a wagon wheel…

And last but not least, in this day and age no cowboy room would be complete without Woody…

And just like Andy did in Toy Story, my kids wrote my son’s name on the bottom of Woody’s boot. Also like Andy, my boy is growing up, so soon we’ll say goodbye to the vintage cowboy room, but it sure was great while it lasted.

vintage gym baskets

8 July 2011 by Andrea Leave a Comment

A while back I bought 3 vintage gym baskets from EveryEskimo a seller on Etsy, who has great vintage treasures.

I’ve always liked the cool look of vintage gym baskets, even though I wasn’t much of an athlete back in school…I class-clowned my way through gym class!

They weren’t particularly inexpensive – in fact they were costly – but I was very attached to these because they were from Republic Steel in Canton, Ohio.

I come from a long line of steelworkers, several of whom worked for Republic Steel in the Massillon-Canton area, and I didn’t know if I’d ever come across gym baskets with a personal connection again, so I sprang for them.

This project cured for at least a year, but I knew what I wanted to do with these the whole time.  My goal was to hang these in the kids’ bathroom to store towels & toilet paper.

So I drilled a couple of holes in my newly painted bathroom wall…a risk for sure, just in case this project didn’t work as planned, since I was ruining a perfectly painted wall. (In case you’re not familiar with various literary devices, this, my friends, is foreshadowing.)

Apparently there are absolutely no studs in my bathroom wall, or at least none where I needed them, so I used anchors to attach the screws and washers that would attach the basket to the wall.

FAIL.

Every time I’d tighten the screw close enough to hold the basket to the wall, the anchor would pull out from the wall. Plus, if I left enough room between the baskets to actually reach in & get the towels or TP out of the basket, the top basket would be at average adult eye level.  Perfect for hitting heads and knocking already not secured baskets out of the wall.

PROJECT FAIL.

Yeah, so that was a disappointment after curing and planning for a solid year.

Back to the drawing board.  I patched the newly painted wall (so sad) and I brainstormed.

Since the baskets are just shy of 12″ x 12″, I realized that what I needed was a stackable cube-type system, and I could use the baskets as the drawers.  So I ran out to Target and bought this ClosetMaid 3-shelf stackable organizer…

I put it together & voila!  A viable solution…

It’s not an ideal solution for a couple of reasons, but it will do the trick for now.  First, the middle shelves are adjustable, so they move when I pull the drawers out.  And the baskets fit pretty tightly and will eventually mark up the white laminate.  But for $20, I solved the problem and got the vintage gym baskets out of curing mode and into action.

Maybe someday I’ll go all Ana White on you guys and make my own cube shelving system.  But until then, this works.

(Keeping it real with the toilet brush in the pic!)

road trip!

28 February 2011 by Andrea 3 Comments

We’re going on a Road Trip!

Road Trip! is when I leave my humble abode and take it on the road to someone else’s place to share their decorating savvy.

So let’s Road Trip! to my dear friend Claire’s home.

Claire is PLU…People Like Us.  She’s fun and funny and very clever and creative.  And since she and her husband, Aaron bought a house about a year ago, she’s let her inner decorator run wild and I love it!

This is Claire…

I’m sure that Claire will probably not appreciate me hijacking this photo from Facebook, but I love it, and it gives a hint of her wild personality, which shows in her decorating choices.

Lest you think she’s completely insane, here’s a more, ahem, normal pic of Claire and her hubby, Aaron.

Aren’t they sweet and so in love?  You can really feel it in their home (which is far more important than any decor), such a sense of warmth and caring that makes their home inviting.

But enough chatter…on to the pictures!

Here it is from the outside…an adorable place in the Clintonville neighborhood in Columbus, Ohio.

Let’s start with the kitchen, which is painted a striking sky blue with lots of red accents…

The thing that surprised me most about Claire’s decorating style when I first saw her house is that she dresses her house like she dresses herself – with bold prints & florals, reminiscent of the 70’s and other vintage eras.  Like the kitchen curtains, for instance…I could see her wearing those!

It’s a small kitchen, so they added valuable work space with this long, narrow island from Ikea.  Don’t you love the original black & white checkered floor?

One of the things that Claire and I have in common is our love of all things vintage and antique.  So you can imagine that I almost died when I saw the vintage restaurant booth that they found in an antique shop.  LURVE it!

The kitchen packs a punch with pops of red and lots of vintage style.  A welcome sign & place to hang your hat…

Along with a vintage reproduction clock…

…and real vintage light fixtures that really make the space…

…and pink vintage melamine coffee cups that would make any vintage-loving gal green with envy…

On to the dining room that shows off Claire’s versatile eclectic style.  A bookshelf and another fun pop of red.  And just in case you didn’t notice, there is a package of mustaches on top of the bookshelf.  Just what every eclectic dining room needs.

Lots of yummy texture on the dining room table and chairs.

A vintage children’s cat chair and a bird cage add to the eclectic elements…

And more pops of color with red chairs and gorgeous curtains!

A true lesson in what I like to call “eclectica”…none of the dining room pieces really “match” but they all look fabulous together!

On the other wall, an antique table that Claire picked up just yesterday in Springfield, Ohio, which is known for it’s antique malls.

It’s carved and fabulous, and she got it for a song!

Step through the archway, and it’s into the living room.  To the left is the main part of the living room…

…with this to-die-for red bench behind the couch…

To the right is a reading nook…

…and a home office area…

Great use of space in corners that would be difficult to incorporate into the main area of the living room.  Love the use of lime green in the living room.

But none of it shouts “lime green”.

OK, maybe these shout “lime green,” but aren’t they perfect?

Let’s take a peek upstairs…

At the top of the stairs is the bathroom, which plays the eclectic card, with cool, mod glass tiles and a vessel sink countered by a bohemian mirror frame.

Doesn’t this bathroom make you want to mix it up a bit in your house? Then there’s this, showing Claire and Aaron’s wacky senses of humor…

Or who knows…maybe they play with them in the tub!  It’s not my place to judge!

The guest bedroom is warm and serene and made me want to move in.  (Guess no one told Claire that a guest bedroom shouldn’t be too comfy cozy or your guests might never leave!)

On to the master bedroom.  Let me tell you that today I fell in LOVE with the master bedroom!  The last time I saw the master bedroom it wasn’t painted yet.  When Claire told me the color she wanted to paint it, well, I was a bit skeptical.  But it’s perfect!

Tiffany blue!  What girl doesn’t like Tiffany blue?  I didn’t think it would be warm and peaceful, but it is both, and it envelopes you in its richness.

The room is large, and has a cozy nook by the closet…

Love the ponyhair cube!  The artwork is SO Claire!  Another pattern I could see her wearing…

Working the eclectica with a touch of Greek goddess…

A dumpster diving friend in Manhattan rescued the dress form where Claire hangs her necklaces.  And check out the lime green cowboy boots that I covet…

A vintage chest of drawers topped with an antique shutter that holds more jewelry and other tchotchkes…

Up close and personal…

Another vintage chest of drawers…

…holds photos and vintage hats…

A wall of family photos make the crawlspace door almost disappear…

That concludes today’s road trip.  Wasn’t it fun?  And inspiring!

Thanks so much to Claire and Aaron for opening their home to me to share with all of you!  It’s a wonderful home, full of warmth and fun.  Congrats to Claire for doing such a great job decorating in one short year!

inspiration from an historic building

27 February 2011 by Andrea Leave a Comment

Today I took the kids to the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus for a lesson in government and politics.

As we tooled around the historic statehouse, which was completed in 1861 after 22 years of construction, I drank in all of the amazing architectural details.  The craftsmanship was stunning – so much intricate detail – no wonder it took 22 years to complete!

Believe it or not, I found plenty of design inspiration at the statehouse and thought I’d share it with you.

The beauty of the rotunda…

Corinthian columns in the Senate Chamber…

These fabulous blue velvet couches were also in the Senate Chamber.  What I wouldn’t do to score one of those for my living room!

Wouldn’t you love these chairs in your kitchen?  Gorgeous!  And don’t you love the pink in the carpet?

An ornate metal grill covering something…

A beautiful wood medallion…

The Senate Chamber doors…they just don’t make things like these doors any more.

Even the trash baskets shout “Ohio”…

The trash baskets in the Senate Chamber are Longaberger, which is based in Ohio.

The hallways had beautiful black & white marble floors that I would love in my kitchen…

When you look up, there are beautiful coffered ceilings…

…and incredible medallions that I NEEEEEED for my bedroom…

The entire place was loaded with gorgeous antique doors!  And an occasional bride & groom.  I want to get married too…to this door, because I love it so much!

If that antique door was my husband, this one is my boyfriend!

So many antique doors, so little time.

Now I’m inspired to find antique doors and ceiling medallions and blue velvet couches to vintage up my house!

A statehouse may seem like an odd place to look for design inspiration, but design is everywhere, so why not find it in the statehouse?

What’s the strangest place you’ve found design inspiration?

lookie what i found

16 January 2011 by Andrea 14 Comments

A while back, I found this in the trash in my neighborhood…

It was a sweet gift from the decorating gods, because I had recently seen what Donna over at Funky Junk Interiors had done with a mattress spring, and I wanted to try my hand at decorating with one.

Well, don’t know if you know this about me yet, but usually I allow my finds to “cure” for a while.  The mattress spring was no different.  It sat in my garage awaiting inspiration for a solid 6 months!

Then this weekend, inspiration struck, when I found this fun piece at Bed, Bath & Beyond…

I love vintage advertising style and I have a standard poodle, so there was no walking away from this one.  Plus I had a $5 off coupon, so it was a done deal for about $15.

But before I bought it, I did ask myself where I would put it, because I don’t buy anything new for the house if I don’t think I have a place for it.

Then I remembered this section of the wall…

…that has been begging for something for a long time.  I had thought about putting the mattress spring there, but it needed a little something.

A little something like the poodle print.

So I hung the mattress spring, making sure it was level…

…with a couple of screws in anchors.

To make the shiny silver screws less obvious against the rusty mattress spring, I just colored them with a brown Sharpie marker.

Then I placed the canvas where I wanted it, hung it with a nail in the wall, through the open area in the spring, and voila!

The perfect frame for a fun print!

I just love it!  Isn’t it adorable?  Decorating with found objects is great fun!

my mother’s dolls

27 November 2010 by Andrea 2 Comments

My mom has 3 older brothers, all of whom are quite a few years older than her, ranging from 7 years older to 16 years older.  When she was a girl, one by one, they all went into military service.

As they traveled throughout their service, they began to send my mom dolls from all over the world.  And so her doll collection began.

My grandfather created a cabinet with a glass door that was built into the wall in my mother’s room.  That is where all of the lovely dolls lived.

When I was a girl, we lived with my grandparents for several years, and my mom’s room became my room.  I would gaze at all of those lovely ladies every day, and even though I was only 5, I never dared to touch them.  Not even once.  Not even the beautiful Serbian doll with real gold earrings, just like the Serbian ladies at our church wore.

Eventually, the dolls moved to my mother’s home when my grandparents passed on.  Then when my folks moved from a house into a condo, my mom said it was time to divide up the dolls between me and my sister. While I thought we might have to duke it out over the dolls, my sister only wanted 2 of the dolls and let me have the rest of the collection.  I was amazed and grateful to have this collection that meant so much to me as a girl.  It was especially generous of her, since I lived in California at the time, and she lived in Ohio.

A couple of years later, I ended up moving home to Ohio, and now live 2 doors down from my sister.  She can visit me and the dolls, who now reside in my living room, whenever she wants to.

How’s that for provenance?

thanksgiving table

27 November 2010 by Andrea 4 Comments

This Thanksgiving I hosted the Thanksgiving dinner and had a total of 11 guests.  Not a huge production, but certainly more than my usual 3 person deal.

As always, I wanted to create a special tablescape, but using things that I have around the house.  Plus, this year, in addition to making it budget friendly, I wanted it to reflect the more austere times that we and many families are experiencing.  Not too sparse, but nothing extravagant either.  So, I went with a combination that I frequently rely on…shabby chic with a touch of whimsical & mod.

As promised, I used the same tablecloth as last year and the year before.  And no, I didn’t iron it…I’m not that kind of girl!  Besides, that’s part of the “shabby”!

I mixed 2 sets of dishes and tied the dinner and salad plates in fun ribbons that I’ve had since forever…

The ribbon takes care of the whimsical…

…and the mod…

The delicate blue glasses are vintage – they were my mom’s from before I was born.

The “centerpiece” is comprised of repurposed Classico pasta sauce jars, filled with a tealight and topped with ribbon, further contributing to the shabby chicness…

But best of all were the family we were blessed to have joining us at this table…

Here’s wishing all of you a warm and wonderful holiday season, filled with the love and laughter of family and friends!
